Project Starline - Google's new-age 3D Video Conferencing technology brings far apart people within a few inches

Since after the Covid-19 Pandemic Last year we have seen quite a few Tech Companies coming out with new solutions for video conferencing, video chatting and precisely making people come together virtually through real-time videos. Google had also brought some of the application to its users like the Google Meet - the Zoom app competitor, Google classroom and quite a few productivity apps.

Project Starline

Google has always shown efforts to bring us softwares that makes life like presence within us. Its new Project Starline is something that is pretty wild and in the same moment a must-try experience for everyone.

Google in its 2021 I/O Developer Conference announced Project Starline. This is something Google claimed that they were working for the past couple of years. Everyone of us has been in Video conference in softwares such as Google Meet, Google Duo, WhatsApp, Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc., but Starline introduces a whole new concept of a new age Video Conferencing Solution.

Starline uses technologies such as Computer Vision, Spatial Audio, Machine Learning and data compression to create a life like real-time video of the user on the other end. It also uses a 65-inch Light Field Display System to produce video with more Depth and Volume and make it a 3-Dimensional experience without the need of Virtual and Augmented Realities. In current Video chatting softwares we see a 2-Dimensional Video of the person which does not seems real but Project Starline will make it happen.

Earlier Cisco came out with Umi (Pronounced You Me) which was a camera hardware by Cisco and was installed on the top of your television to Video Chat with people on the television. But Umi didn't became that popular and the company discontinued it after 2 years. Some companies have also tried to bring Video Chatting life like with the help of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Headsets but none have become much popular.

Google's Starline on the other half lets you Video Conference with no Headsets but from the comfort of your couch. The Technology enable you to experience as if you are talking to the other person through a window. Google showed some of the experience with this new device on its I/O Developer Conference and we see that, it is so much real - just feels like the fellows are couple of inches apart whereas the person might be sitting in several time zones away.

Associated Problems

Google's Starline also brings new problems to make it available for everyone. The first problem is the unique hardware that will be needed and how much would the set up cost. This new technology cannot be embedded into your smartphone with the help of an app as it requires custom-built hardwares and equipments  to create such a video.

Moreover there is another problem which is this technology records a ton of data from the user and then processes it and sends to the other user. Such data also requires significant internet speeds to convey large amount of information in a very very less time, to create a smooth experience. Without such internet speeds we would only experience a very faulty Video Chat. So Google is working on data compressions to reduce this data to its minimal volume that can be transferred through minimal internet speeds. Google has its own compression algorithms which are already used in Google meet and they are improving it more.

Google uses this device using its hi-speed optical fiber connections to deliver crisp videos but it needs more compression for use in minimal internet speeds.

Rolling Out

The company says with coming years it would bring the whole setup to an affordable cost so that everyone can use it either for personal use or for business purposes. The Starline is currently used in some of the Google's Offices like Mountain View, Seattle and New York.

As the Project Starline comes on sale it would first be installed in companies and slowly it would be sold to customers for personal use.
